David Price undergoes MRI on elbow…will seek second opinion

David Price

The 2017 Boston Red Sox season is off to a great start and we’re not even one month into spring training. The Red Sox could possibly be without their 217 million dollar man in David Price for the entire season, of which most of us fear could be Tommy John surgery. Price was set to make his first spring training start this week but was scratched and had an MRI on Wednesday. He is set to travel to Indianapolis to meet with the world’s most famous orthopedic surgeon, and you damn well know who he is..THE Dr. James Andrews. As most of us sports fans know meeting with Dr. Andrews usually means the worst is yet to come, and let’s assume that Tommy John Surgery is in Price’s near future.

If our fears come true and Price misses all of this upcoming season and parts of next season, Red Sox fans are going to question the signing of Price. Obviously in year 2 of a 7 year 217 million dollar contract Price has not lived up to expectations of being the ace of this pitching staff and winning big games (still win less in the postseason as a starter). After posting good but not great numbers in his first season in a Sox uniform last season, (17-9 W-L, 3.99 ERA, 228 K in 230 IP) expectations remain high for the former Cy Young winner. He is the clear cut number 2 starter behind Chris Sale for this pitching staff many are considering the best in baseball. If he does indeed go down for the entire season, this staff will take a big hit but I would not hit the panic button when actual games haven’t been played yet.

I for one am not in panic mode on March 2nd. This pitching staff has a lot of potential and it starts with Chris Sale. Sale was the clear cut number 1 starter when the Red Sox acquired him in December. Although he has never pitched a single inning in the post season, the expectations are as high as they get as this team is one of the odds on favorites to win it all.  The Red Sox were able to win 93 games and the division last season with Rick Porcello being the team’s best pitcher putting up a Cy Young award winning season. If he can somewhat put up great numbers again this pitching staff has the potential to win a lot of games for this team with or without Price. It all comes down to the other 3 pitchers, will the 23 year old Eduardo Rodriguez finally prove himself that he can be a consistent starting pitcher in the bigs. He is looking like the number 3 guy and is going to have to be reliable this season. Can knuckleballer Steven Wright replicate his all star season last year before he got injured thanks to John Farrell’s stupidity. Finally, who will fill the 5th and final spot in this rotation, the favorite is looking like Drew Pomeranz at the moment with the verdict still out him. The Red Sox gave up one of their top pitching prospects for this guy and so far he’s been more useful out of the bullpen rather as a starter. I still believe with or with out David Price this team can win at least 95 games and contend for a championship in October.
